ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers the implications of the use of new technologies for Arab economic performance. It discusses the salient features of the new generic technologies, and investigates the extent to which the skills, capabilities, and institutions in Arab countries are sufficient and appropriate for the absorption of these technologies. The book suggests possible future events related to the use of foreign currencies, including the euro, by Arab countries. It also discusses the apparent conflict between Arab regional integration and adhesion to the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. The book provides a brief historical perspective on the evolution of the European Union and highlights its most important accomplishments. It focuses on the issues of best practice in regional integration and the lessons from international experiences that could be useful to Arab integration.
