ABSTRACT

In the first part of this chapter we provide a brief description of the socioeconomic characteristics of the survey households. The major focus will be on the possession and utilization of land. We discuss changes in landholding for the panel households during the past five years, and highlight the role of land as a major component of the overall wealth of rural households. In a second section, we present changes in welfare indicators, as reported by the survey households, over the past five years, and report on causes for positive and negative changes as indicated by the household head.
