ABSTRACT

This chapter draws out how algorithms perform as an active element within the creative process of each piece of work, part of the complex assemblage of abstractions, processes and people co-participating in a production. It outlines the monitoring system used to gather the data that drives the visualisation, giving insight into the assemblage of people and processes involved. The computer-generated elements sit against live-action footage filmed during a residency at the Mineral Sciences Laboratory at the Smithsonian Institute. The whole is accompanied by a soundtrack comprised of three elements: A voice-over, ambient sound from the lab and seismic data of earthquake tremors converted into sound. The complexity of the mixed materiality of physical sound and algorithmically generated noise is intriguing, and another place where performative digital materiality emerges. Seismic sound is used to sculpt motion, suggesting an experience closer to a natural phenomenon.
