ABSTRACT

Discussion of the proposed framework will show that many disagreements are based in fundamental conflicts about how to conceptualize androgyny and how to understand personality processes, rather than simply in conflicting data. The taxonomic framework proposed in this chapter is designed to assist the understanding of androgyny by specifying the variations in conceptions of androgyny and personality processes that underlay research in the field. The focus is on processes involved in information processing, such as perception, attention, categorization, memory, etc. The major issue for androgyny research is construct validation and the proposed taxonomic framework serves as one organizing schema for that process. As the taxonomic framework makes clear, there are a variety of possible personality processes involved in the development and expression of androgyny. Detailing conceptual and methodological differences within the androgyny literature serves to highlight theoretical and measurement inconsistencies in some studies.
