ABSTRACT

As increasing numbers of women are entering the labor force, understanding the types of career choices women make becomes increasingly important for understanding the lives of women. Using the various conceptions of scripts discussed earlier, the authors propose a model for women's decision making about career choices. In order to empirically investigate the effects of script knowledge on career choice in women, the authors have asked women to generate daily life scripts for women in various life situations. Questionnaires included questions about the women's year in school, age, marital status, and number of children. Initial analyses of the study participants indicated that consistent with other recent studies of college women, this group had quite high career goals as well as wanting to marry and have children. Female jobs were more chosen because of good job opportunties and because they allowed one to work with women and/or children.
