ABSTRACT

Childhood and adolescent problems in adjustment have been an increasing concern since the last century. Suicide is an important mental health and public health problem worldwide. Adolescents and even children commit suicide. An even greater number of youth attempt or seriously think about suicide as the solution to their life’s difficulties. School staff are in a unique position to recognize the possibility of suicide and to take preventive action. Teachers and other school staff especially can make a major contribution to saving a life. This chapter talks about the rationale for programs in schools of a comprehensive nature and focuses on prevention, relating primarily to dissemination of information. Schools can support efforts in helping a suicidal person and in making sure that professional help is obtained, which may very likely save a life. Teachers must recognize their role as potential supporters and can readily learn appropriate ways of dealing with suicidal young people.
