ABSTRACT

In examining the school as a support in times of loss and grief, there are two concepts whose meaning must be clearly understood—bereavement and grief. The Association for Death Education and Counseling has provided help in creating an atmosphere of support in schools following a loss. Many children need care in all areas of their lives when trying to cope with a major loss, such as with the death of a loved one. When rituals take place in a school following a major loss, such as a death, parents should be kept informed of all that takes place so that they can remain the primary support for their children. Parents, teachers, and other concerned adults model ways to deal with loss and sadness. They can show children that grief hurts, tears are “normal,” and that emotions need not be “avoided.” Such an experience can reduce fears of both children and parents and is really effective teaching.
