ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about losses by death and describes that very often persons with developmental challenges suffer multiple losses, home, family, and security, with the passing of a parent or main caregiver. It offers some reflections and thoughts on delivering care to adults who have developmental challenges. The difficulties for the bereaved population of adults with developmental disabilities may come from their cognitive difficulties or the expression of their emotions which is going to translate the true feeling. It is a behavior which is going to translate their true feelings. Moreover, society around them does not treat them in the same way it does other members; either they are perceived as needing to be protected from harsh reality or they are not allowed to talk about the fact. Persons with developmental disabilities make up a segment of society that has experienced multiple losses over time and that lacks social support and even more so at times of death.
