ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the history of the approach, the system of integration and the results of the studies. It also discusses the expected agreement in solving the remaining environmental load by abatement at the sources and by spatial planning in the region. The chapter examines conflict between economic, environment and physical planning. Information was also developed concerning the desirability of integrated environmental zoning. Integrated environmental zoning, started with this goal: Tuning of decisions in case of environmentally intrusive activities and environmental sensitive activities to achieve distance and/or reduction of industrial emissions. The integrated environmental zoning project in the IJmond-region, located near Amsterdam, has provided a clear assessment of pollution impacts on this area, and their implications for development. This combination of abatement and restrictions on development will lead to a solution of the conflict between industrial expansion and the need for new residential areas.
