ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with many issues related to automation in communications, navigation and surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) systems and points to potential problems, based on past experience in other, safety critical industries, and identifies possible solutions. It addresses the first of these issues utilizing experience gained from human factors knowledge. The chapter presents the human factors implications of automation and advanced technology in future aviation systems, including CNS/ATM systems. The Tenth Air Navigation Conference recognized the importance of human factors in the design and transition of future air traffic control systems. Technology has advanced to an extent for computers to be able to perform nearly all of the continuous air traffic control and surveillance as well as aircraft navigational tasks of the aviation system. Many system designers view humans as unreliable and inefficient and think that they should be eliminated from the system.
