ABSTRACT

This chapter examines engineering objects through the lens of analytic ontology. After introducing this approach, I review two issues that have been raised regarding the products of artisanal and engineering activities: how, if at all, we are committed to the existence of such objects; and how to identify real kinds of engineering objects. I argue that, to tackle these issues, reflections are required on the full variety of engineering objects, including processes and systems, with more attention paid to engineering practice and non-linguistic modes of involvement with objects.
