ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces HR planning and reviews its underlying philosophies and how it works out in the real world. It explores its strategic dimensions and the impact of contextual dynamics. It is noted that the rise of the gig economy may challenge traditional approaches to HR planning; although not all HR planning is based on sound HR management, proper HR planning implies a longer-term focus to an organization’s people. Hence, although sometimes seen as inflexible and technicist, proper HR planning does take seriously the importance and potential of existing staff and thus constitutes a key dimension of good people management.
