ABSTRACT

Abstract This chapter aims to contribute to the debate of how and why the ancients painted their marble sculptures, by focusing on how the marbles were textured. The authors’ hypothesis is that painted marble sculptures were meant to enchant and capture the viewer through artistic dematerializations of the sculptural materials. The results appealed to vision, touch, and sometimes even taste and smell. The authors discuss illusionary and multi-sensory experiences of painted marble sculptures based on their work in the “Tracking Colour” Project at the Copenhagen Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (Skovmøller) and the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research (Hildebrandt).
