ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the prospect for legacies of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games for community sport in Japan. Bidding and winning the right to host the Tokyo 2020 Games accelerated the development of Japanese sport policy. However, although the most of action and legacy plans emphasised the promotion of community sport, there seems to be challenges for building legacy of the 2020 Tokyo Games on community sport, namely an imbalance in policy focus, the lower levels of funding for community sport as compared to elite sport, the reduction in sport facilities, and the rapid demographic change towards an ‘ageing society’.
