ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to guide the reader through a better understanding of technical and physical qualities related to weightlifting, and how to impact these qualities through coaching and programming. Weightlifting is an Olympic sport where athletes aim to achieve the highest total of two lifts; the snatch and the jerk. The execution of the lifts requires skill and high levels of strength and power in order to allow the athlete to best manipulate an optimal bar path, thus increasing the likelihood of success. Since both physical and technical capabilities of weightlifting can be trained concurrently, manipulation of exercise selection, intensity and volume during different phases of training can elicit the greatest outcome.
