ABSTRACT

In 2012, the author's convened a two-day symposium on youth subcultures in Australia. When we organised the event, we did not quite know what to expect; however, we did know there was a critical mass of research being done on youth culture in Australia at the time. This collection covers themes such as class, gender, sexuality, place and ethnicity, advancing our analysis and understanding of these structures while also documenting a range of social and cultural practices that make up everyday life for young people locally in Australia and globally. The analytic lens combines Bourdieu's concept of distinction thus picking up on Thread gold's arguments in and the notion of youth reflexivity. This chapter opens with Bob Buttigieg reflecting on the problems involved in structuring research on queer youth around categories such as queer' and youth', which inevitably fall apart when examined forensically.
