ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by defining the term ‘forced marriage’ before considering what going missing means in this context. Next, the links between forced marriage and going missing are presented using the concepts of ‘intentional’ and ‘unintentional’ missing incidents (as defined by Biehal et al., 2003). The discussion then turns to implications for practice. Here it is argued that the police and other professionals working in statutory agencies (education, health, housing and benefits) need to recognise that forced marriage can be both a cause and a consequence of going missing and that the dynamics and risks surrounding this and other forms of ‘honour’- based violence should be considered in training and investigation. Finally, appropriate forms of support for survivors are identified.
