ABSTRACT

Traumatic loss is often conceptualized in terms of (i) adult experiences; and (ii) reactions to bereavement. This chapter moves away from that approach by focusing specically on childhood trauma and by examining child abuse as a major source of such trauma. This is not to deny the signicance of children’s experiences of bereavement, but, rather, to broaden out the focus to make it clear that death-related losses are not the only major source of trauma for children and young people.
