ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews environmental issues in development and concepts and ethics relating to the environment and human well-being. It introduces environmentalism, the Green Movement, green politics, environmental change, development threats and opportunities, and environmental determinism. An overview is provided of the neo-Malthusians, the limits to growth debate, the Gaia hypothesis, sustainable development, the precautionary and polluter-pays principles, the growth of popular, business and media interest in development, the UN 1992 Rio ‘Earth Summit’, millennium stocktaking and resolutions, and the emergence of environmental management.
