ABSTRACT
Earth System Science is an integrated approach to research that describes, explains and seeks to predict the evolution of the biosphere, crysosphere, atmosphere, pedosphere and hydrosphere. A relatively young, but fast growing area of geoscience, Earth System Science is integral to future attempts to study and manage the human impact on the Earth. This chapter outlines the origins, growth and present character of Earth System Science.
