ABSTRACT

Recent analyses of the dynamics of industrial clusters are driving increasing attention to the main factors that affect the cluster’s evolution. Several studies have presented strong empirical evidence on how industrial clusters emerge and grow over time (Audretsch and Feldman, 1996; Belussi and Sedita, 2009; Elola et al., 2012), what makes them decline (Østergaard and Park, 2015) as well as renew (Vale and Caldeira, 2007; Hervás-Oliver and Albors-Garrigós, 2014). In general, there is strong recognition that the existence and the structure of industrial clusters can be understood only when analysing their evolution over time (Audretsch and Feldman, 1996; Lombardi, 2003; Menzel and Fornahl, 2009; Boschma and Fornahl, 2011; Ter Wal and Boschma, 2011).
