ABSTRACT

The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) is a 90-item self-report symptom inventory. The primary symptom dimensions of the SCL-90-R are Somatization, Obsessive-Compulsive, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic Anxiety, Paranoid Ideation, and Psychoticism. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) comprises 53 items and represents the brief form of the SCL-90-R. Internal consistency reliability coefficients for the BSI were established based on a sample of 719 psychiatric outpatients, using Cronbach's coefficient alpha. A comprehensive review of criterion-oriented validity studies involving the BSI was made available by L. R. Derogatis. The global severity index represents the most sensitive single quantitative indicator concerning the respondent's overall psychological distress status on the SCL-90-R/BSI/BSI-18 series of tests. The SCL-90-R and BSI have also been utilized effectively in treatment planning studies with a healthcare systems orientation. The SCL-90-R also served as one of the principal outcome measures in a large multicenter trial evaluating the efficacy of alprazolam in the treatment of agoraphobia and panic disorder.
