ABSTRACT

Heteronormativity does not entirely rule the fairy-tale world. While traditional fairy tales often included same-sex romances, interspecific relationships, and other queer indices, those which did were not the best-known examples of the form. However, feminist and queer artists and their allies have begun creating alternatives. Queering fairy tales, but also sexes, sexualities, and genders in fairy-tale media, I explore how scholars have understood (queer) fairy tales and media and how media have constructed (queer) fairy-tale characters, including the example of film versions of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Snow Queen.”
