ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys and analyses a range of non-biblical writings often known as ‘New Testament Apocrypha’ or ‘Early Christian Apocrypha’. Many but not all of these texts have the same literary form as books found in the New Testament: gospels, acts, letters and apocalypses. Many feature characters also found in the New Testament, and some feature characters from the Jewish Bible. They are important witnesses to the development of Christianity in the ancient world and beyond and to the way in which some Christians interpreted the Bible and understood the significance of Jesus and his followers.
