ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on unemployment and underemployment in the United States, with the intention of developing a cogent analysis of evidence-based practices for individual interventions and policy recommendations. It deals with a systemic analysis, underscoring the need for career development and workforce professionals to engage in the broader conversation about the creation of more equitable job creation policies that supports the development and sustenance of decent and dignified work. The chapter discusses the view articulated by Prilleltensky, who argued that a communitarian perspective underscores distributive justice in conjunction with collaboration and a balance between individual rights and social obligations. It explores the conceptual framework by incorporating the psychology of working framework. The chapter provides a brief overview of the needs of unemployed adults and the common individual employment, training, and career counseling services that have been offered.
