ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on second language (L2) pragmatics are being given more frequently at a panoply of meetings. It intends to describe a number of the studies so that readers can get a sense of what has been done recently in the field and what remains to be done. The chapter explains glean insights from research studies as to how learners can be more pragmatically appropriate in a host of L2 performance situations, whether in the perception and production of speech acts or in other areas. It makes an effort to be comprehensive in its coverage of topics that have been studied in L2 pragmatics. The chapter considers how to teach the pragmatics of language behavior. It discusses in turn the teaching of requests, criticism, refusals, phatic communication, English as a lingua franca, materials development, digitally mediated contexts for learning pragmatics, and the assessment of pragmatics.
