ABSTRACT

The campus leadership role of a dean has many facets, but one which is not often clearly delineated is the expectation that a dean will be present and visible in external settings beyond the campus. A dean's involvement in off-campus initiatives adds considerable complexities and challenges to an already complicated leadership role and can be especially confounding for deans in colleges and schools of education. The manner in which deans form relationships with Pk-12 schools has a variety of different arrangements. One of the major responsibilities of education deans is to develop a relationship with the local schools. In some cases, this responsibility goes beyond the Pk-12 schools and the dean becomes involved in additional community roles. The ultimate goal of working in the community is to demonstrate the importance of campus engagement in issues that are important and relevant to the surrounding community.
