ABSTRACT

This chapter draws attention to the challenges involved in co-ordinating the interests and outlooks of the stakeholders. It outlines a series of aspects shaping forensic innovation in the UK. The chapter examines the influence of these factors on forensic innovation. It utilizes a series of examples of emerging technology which commonly feature among contemporary discussions between forensic science stakeholders. The chapter also explores the possible role commercial imperatives, may play in complicating these issues. It draws upon published academic literature and discussions with UK forensic stakeholders. Police procurement of new technology is often independent of the Home Office, but through its Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST), the latter is able to exert some influence. The chapter also outlines an innovation landscape in the UK which includes the potential contribution of academia and government-supported research in the form of the Home Office Applied Science and Technology.
