ABSTRACT

The chapter explores some of the themes and issues raised by the Hayhurst, Giles and Wright, including Indigenous female leadership, the relationship between funders and the organizations they support and the idea of incorporating larger political movements into SDP programs. Hayhurst, Giles and Wright reported on a program that recognizes the benefit of Indigenous girls being exposed to female role models in their communities. The assumption that female role models can only come to younger women through post-secondary school opportunities overlooks equally valuable role models have not had traditional educational opportunities such as a college or university experience. Surely it is important to have Indigenous females whose leadership is firmly rooted in their own culture. This chapter suggests that SDP programs can challenge marginalization by connecting women to national political movements such as Idle No More however; suggest that connecting Indigenous women in the NWT to more local issues have a direct connection to would be more empowering.
