ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the usefulness of the Psychopathy Check List: Youth Version score (PCL: YV), ICU, and Clinical and Forensic Interview Schedule: Youth Version instruments that may be used to collect and quantify attitudes, history, and behaviors in a manner that lends itself to addressing these issues. There are multiple reasons for assessing psychopathy in school-age children. Developmental Course of Psychopathy Like adults, aggressive children and adolescents with psychopathy traits display different personality characteristics and require different treatment strategies than aggressive youth without these features. Problems with empathy are a hallmark characteristic of psychopathy. Although there are critical theoretical and clinical differences between psychopathy and narcissism, there are several overlapping interpersonal and affective characteristics that predict aggression and violent behaviour The PCL: YV is considered the gold standard for measuring psychopathy characteristics in youth. Although schools are required to provide treatments to youth with disruptive behaviors in the school, many districts underserve youth without the special education mandate for treatment.
