ABSTRACT

Children of divorce make up a sizable cross-section of the "underage" population who are often referred to school counselors and school psychologists, and/or brought to therapists in private practice or in community agencies. Just in the United States alone, since 1975, over one million children per year have experienced parental divorce (National Center for Health Statistics, 1995). However, the fact that divorce has become a normative experience for many children does not make it a normal or an easy experience to endure. Parental divorce is in the least, a difficult experience for most children and severely disturbing for many (Emery & Forehand, 1994).
