ABSTRACT

One distinctive feature of Swedes, according to foreigners, is our degree of shyness and introversion. The study reported in this chapter concerns inhibition in relation to experiences of out-of-home care among Swedish toddlers and pre-schoolers. Although the present study was not designed to assess cross-cultural differences in inhibition, it is important that this construct be studied in samples other than the ones reported thus far (i.e., middle-class, Caucasian, North American children). The study reported herein is part of The Göteborg Child Care Project, which began in 1982. The broader purpose of The Göteborg Child Care Project has been to examine the effects of daycare on young children's development, in the context of other formative factors, such as child, family, and child care characteristics.
