ABSTRACT
This address was given by Margaret Cerullo, a member of the Department of Sociology at Hampshire College, to the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Teachers Network of Massachusetts. The reference to “Walta” in the opening line is to poet Walta Borawski, whose poem “Cheers, Cheers for Old Cha Cha Ass” recounts the painof school homophobia.
