ABSTRACT

Two distinct perspectives examine the relationship between traditional bullying and cyberbullying among adolescents. The first perspective focusses on ‘differences’ and suggests that the two types of bullying are qualitatively distinct behaviours, each contributing unique variance to the negative outcomes that follow involvement in bullying. The second approach is the ‘extension’ perspective, which posits that cyberbullying is an extension or new form of traditional bullying. These perspectives have implications for the management of cyberbullying and suggest future directions for bullying and cyberbullying research.
