ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, Dr. Corlisse Thomas and Dr. André McKenzie examine both the challenges and successes in meeting the needs of students who attend urban-serving institutions. The discussion focuses on wrap-around support programs, the role of student services in the growing number of graduation initiatives, and the importance of designing culturally relevant/responsive student services that reject a deficit framework. This chapter also explores the creativity with which student affairs leaders must approach their work with staff in order to best serve the needs of students.
