ABSTRACT

Chapter 5, written by Dr. Michael A. Freeman and Dr. Anna M. Ortiz, discusses the variety of ways that urban-serving institutions promote student engagement, given proportionally small residential populations. This chapter acknowledges the theoretical and practical importance of engagement and belonging in the college experience while also highlighting the creativity and persistence that is needed on the part of student affairs divisions to engage and develop a sense of belonging for students. Examples such as involvement in the community and working with academic affairs are presented in the chapter. Campus climate also rises as an issue as leaders manage creating safe and enriching spaces for all students.
