ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book shares the experiences and lessons learnt among development partners, non-governmental organisations, academia and development practitioners about the methodologies, principles and practices needed to implement a holistic ecosystem-based approach to development interventions that address climate change adaptation and ecosystem management. It divides in to four thematic areas mirroring the project implementation objectives: namely, building ecosystem resilience; building social resilience; ecosystem threats and management; and ecosystem monitoring and outreach. The book demonstrates the importance of building a knowledge base in delivering programmes and projects using ecosystems approach EA and ecosystems-based approach EBA where ecosystem managers adopt and adapt to bring about effective and sustainable ecosystem restoration. It provides downright good advice for practitioners, researchers and academicians who want to do something practical to enhance community resilience to climate change in Africa.
