ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the song/dance “Woh Ladki Hai Kahan” from the Bollywood movie, titled Dil Chahta Hai (2001; dir. Farhan Akhtar) as being concerned with identity and self. The dance/song incorporates the self’s desire for the other to fashion a new definition of Indian modernity in tune with both the past and the present. Furthermore, this song encapsulates an emergence of a self whose encounter with the Other serves to define the national imaginary.
