ABSTRACT

Transmitted to customers on devices such as smart phones, laptops and tablets, technology-mediated services are rapidly changing the way many people in Britain access services in a number of industries, from ride-sharing to food delivery, and increasingly also the ways in which many people find work, from cleaning and construction work to professional work such as lawyers and accountants. Online demand labour is characterised by uncertain hours and unstable income with no career or wage progression because workers are only paid when the market needs them. This chapter focuses on the UK’s market leading platform that offers a range of sexual goods and services, including local on-demand labour (direct sex work) and online demand labour (technology-mediated sexual services), but there is a diversity of online and offline spaces used to facilitate technology-mediated sexual services that use different business models to generate income.
