ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the situation of the joint planning effort being carried out in the Balkan region with the assistance of the The European Investment Bankand (EIB) the main criteria directing the exercise. The EIB is one of the main vehicles of the European Union to provide assistance to the Balkan region, in particular to the improvement of its transport infrastructure. The success of the ongoing planning depends heavily on the ability of the countries of the region and the international institutions to jointly establish a process for the efficient application of resources, with the specific aim of developing the relations between the Balkan countries and the European Union. The EIB, which is the first supranational financing institution in terms of lending, concentrates most of its activity in European Union countries, but is now confronted with the challenge of financing the major investment effort needed in European Union candidate countries to achieve the conditions for accession.
