ABSTRACT

Long-term outcome measurement will be necessary to document the enduring benefits of residential interventions and ensure the viability of residential interventions as a treatment strategy for youth with acute intensive service needs and their families. By integrating research literature, BBI principles, and provider experiences, this chapter reviews the history and evolution of efforts to document the effects and impact of residential interventions, and outlines steps for formulating theories of change and methodically developing measurement strategies that can provide reliable and valid evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions. Authors provide recommendations for activities that can be undertaken to advance this work, and the field, toward a more comprehensive and integrated understanding of the impact of residential interventions.
