ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Europe's profile, which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. The interaction between business and society in Europe is shaped by the diversity of economic, political and cultural landscapes across the continent. In post-communist Central and Eastern Europe, environmental and social concerns have tended to receive less attention than the significant economic challenges associated with the transition to a market economy. The CSR priorities of companies in Europe reflect the economic, social and environmental challenges faced by European societies, as well as the business challenges faced by companies operating in an increasingly globalised and interconnected marketplace. European countries have some of the highest environmental standards in the world. Regarding occupational health and safety, companies' CSR initiatives focus on a number of issues related to various health support services and prevention of ill health.
