ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the local businesses and organisations through contacts with the city government and other community entities. Environmental assessments pollution prevention opportunity assessments or sustainability assessments are used by industry to optimise their operations. These assessments involve characterising the process, identifying potential alternatives, evaluating the alternatives and making recommendations. Pollution prevention, sustainable design and cleaner production demonstrate their main value through industrial application; thus, it is even more important for students to get direct personal experience in these subjects. For example, the value of a pollution prevention activity changes with a specific business application because of a number of variables. The community organisations receiving the assessment appreciate the straightforward cost and waste reduction approach and the involvement with a local university. The assessment approach is an application of the sustainability and pollution prevention technical information that the students are first taught during class lectures.
