ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors develop the class on the premise that the business community needs to provide more leadership as society struggles to accept the challenges of living and acting sustainably. In the autumn of 2001, they met at Baxter's corporate headquarters in Deerfield, IL to explore the possibility of having students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison work on real sustainability projects with Baxter. The authors create a situation where Baxter would benefit from student research and where students would benefit from interacting with professionals in a corporation while helping to solve real business sustainability issues. Early during the semester, Baxter's environmental, health and safety Sustainable Development Team sent the Environmental Strategy and Sustainability class an invitation to evaluate Baxter's sustainability progress and direction. Baxter intends to use the students' research to support Baxter's short-term and longer-term sustainability initiatives.
