ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of an executive education program for nurse leaders designed to address the dearth of business leadership development opportunities for this population in the United States. This lack of development opportunity may in turn contribute to the high nurse turnover experienced in US healthcare organizations system-wide, as well as lack of a stronger nurse voice at the table when addressing the multi-layered healthcare crisis. The chapter explores issues confronting nurses moving into organizational leadership that considered in program design; summarizes program curricula and delivery; and also presents evidence of program outcomes. It provides the details and outcomes of the Company Extension. The chapter concludes with challenges facing those interested in providing business-oriented leadership development for nurses. As nurses move into leadership and work more closely with physicians and non-clinical business leaders, they may face both internal and external threats to their identity.
