ABSTRACT
For those who work intimately with sign languages or Deaf culture, it is self-evident that
sign languages are autonomous languages with their own linguistic principles. But this
has not always been the case: The development of this idea owes much to the seminal
contributions of Ursula Bellugi-Klima and Edward Klima, as well as to those they
inspired and guided through the years.
