ABSTRACT

Organic molecules of biological origin, for example, DNA, proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, hormones, and other endogenously functional materials, are chiral ones. Academic researcher may try to design fourth- and fifth-generation synthesis of medicines by considering 12 green chemistry principles that would signify successful incorporation of green principle in the education system. As a matter of fact, asymmetric synthesis, essential to the development of chiral medicines, is of the enablers to improve atom economy and reduce the process mass intensity. In the pharmaceutical industry, nearly 60% of the drugs currently in use are chiral in nature. Although asymmetric center–containing molecules and their enantiomers have the same chemical structure, they exhibit entirely different biological activities. A lot of advances have been made in the area of organic chemistry that led to the development of second- and third-generation synthesis of most of the medicines that are in use.
