ABSTRACT

Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, the largest reservoir being the oceans, accompanied by fresh surface water bodies and polar ice and snow caps. But water is present also in the entire upper part of the lithosphere. The term geohydroderm has been suggested to address this global terrestrial water domain (Mazor, 1986). The geohydroderm is composed of a number of large-scale global subsystems for which the term geosystems is suggested; these are further addressed in section 2.1.2.
