ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a map of Gemini and Canis Minor, together with parts of other constellations such as Auriga, Cancer, Orion, Monoceros and Lynx. Gemini is one of the most brilliant of the Zodiacal constellations. Its main stars are Castor and Pollux. Pollux is a single K-type star, 60 times as luminous as the Sun. Apart from Castor, there are several double stars in Gemini within the range of modest telescopes; Mu, Kappa, Nu and Lambda all have companions which are above the tenth magnitude. Another interesting object in Gemini is NGC 2392 (C39), a planetary nebula which lies not far from Delta; it is often nicknamed the Eskimo Nebula, also been referred to as the Clown Face. Canis Minor has only one bright star, Procyon. At less than 12 light-years, it is one of our nearest stellar neighbours. Like Sirius, it has a white dwarf companion, but the brilliance of the primary makes the white dwarf a difficult object.
