Simple closed-form solutions exist for complete data sets. In general, a
nonlinear optimization technique such as Newton-Raphson is needed to identify
a solution to Eq. (7B.4). Consult references by Meeker and Escobar (1998) and
Lawless (1982) for more detailed information on this model. The use of
likelihood estimation techniques is discussed in greater detail in Chapter 9.
